On March 25, 2017, the closing session of the rogatory process in the cause of beatification or declaration of martyrdom of the servant of God Ezekiel Ramin” took place in the parish of St. Joseph in Padua, Italy. The celebration involved the entire parish in this event which brings to a close a process officially opened in Padua on April 10, 2016. Bishop Claudio Cipolla of Padua, president of the tribunal instituted for the rogatory process, presided over the event.

Msgr. Pietro Brazzale, general coordinator of the rogatory process, spoke on the work done by the church tribunal of Padua. He was followed by Comboni Missionary Fr. Armando Baritussio, postulator of the cause of beatification of Fr. Ezekiel, who briefed the assembly on how the trial took place in Brazil. With the passion typical of when he speaks about Fr. Ezekiel, he spoke of the year he spent in Brazil in order to contact the witnesses who made depositions on the missionary life of Fr. Ezekiel and on his impact on the lives of the people during his brief presence in the diocese of Ji Paraná, Rondônia.

The process of gathering witnesses’ accounts from over 70 people who knew and worked with Fr. Ezekiel was long and strenuous. The most important deposition and fundamental in the trial was the one of Mr. Adilio, the only eye witness of Fr. Ezekiel’s killing.

Other speakers were Fr. Jeremias Martins, representing the superior general of the Comboni Missionaries, Fr. Giovanni Munari, and Fr. Gaetano Borgo, diocesan mission director of Padua.

After the speeches, Fr. Arnaldo Baritussio was chosen as the bearer of the entire process to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

The celebration, which started with a time of prayer, but at the same time, as an official juridical act in the beatification process, continued with an act of thanksgiving to God for the gift of Fr. Ezekiel. Following the listening to the word of God and a brief comment from the bishop of Padua, the two-hour long celebration ended with a final blessing and a song in honor of St. Daniel Comboni, founder of the Comboni Missionaries.

There are two fundamental elements in this cause for the martyrdom of Fr. Ezekiel in view of his beatification: the positive historic memory in the life of the people where the martyr worked and the fundamental motive for his martyrdom, namely his faith in Jesus Christ. After all the investigations were completed, these two elements are very much present and this fact gives us the assurance that the process will reach a successful conclusion, even as we know that it will be lengthy and will entail a lot more work, especially in the preparation of the “Positio super virtutibus.” This is the challenge facing us at the moment.

At this celebration Fr. Ezekiel’s brother confirmed their decision to allow the return of the body to Brazil, il the Church of Brazil so wishes, as it had already been mentioned during the trial in Ji Paraná.
