(Sr. Maria do Rosario Vaz Marinho)

(Sr. Maria do Rosario Vaz Marinho)

Homily of Card. Gabriel Zubeir Wako

I address the Youth; I have said to you that it is the Millennium of the Youth; the millennium of people who look to the future. A millennium of those who want to build the future; not just any future, but a future that they have been building for Africa: A future where there is peace, grace, reconciliation and holiness.
This is exactly the kind of future we have been longing for, and today we are celebrating the man who stood up before the world to declare that it is possible and necessary that Africa be recognized as a land of peace, of love and a land of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In his time, geography books illustrated Africa as a land of wild animals, and people in Europe used to think that Africans were not human beings. But Comboni said to them that these are also children of God created in the image and likeness of God, and that also for them Jesus Christ died on the cross. The heart of Jesus, even to this day, is beating in love for Africa because here there are a multitude of the needy and the poor. So Comboni took up the task of completing the work of Salvation for Africa initiated by Christ and reveal to them what was in the heart of Jesus.
We are celebrating this man, and there is no other people to whom the celebration of the feast of Comboni means as much as it means to us. People say Africans do no know thankfulness. But this celebration is a sign of our thanks and appreciation. With this feast, we are saying: thank you Comboni, and thank you Lord for sending Comboni to us. But we want to translate our thanks into something new: the hope and the work of Comboni was to see a new Africa, a renewed Africa which is only possible through us the old, and the young, all of us want to build the kind of Africa which Comboni hoped for. For such Africa to exist, it was mandatory to make Christ known throughout its territory, without Christ Africa will never advance. Because salvation is only in Jesus Christ, if that is our faith then let our efforts and obligations be that Jesus be known to us, as well as to our brothers and sisters. Jesus Christ is the only one who can bring a change in Africa and in the Sudan from its present problems. Comboni was a great evangelizer and he wants all of us to be evangelizers, to take Jesus Christ to others.
Today we are celebrating this and we are thankful for having come to know Jesus Christ. And this knowledge of Christ has to be an active and dynamic knowledge that leads us always to hope and stir us to evangelize.
St. Paul said, "Cursed should I be if I do not evangelize." Today t his phrase opens the way so as to say to ourselves, "I have to be an evangelizer of Jesus Christ." At least if in our groups we must be able to speak in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and able to encourage ourselves and others in the name of Jesus Christ. It is only in this way that we are strengthened and we make our brothers and sisters strong in faith because no one can keep faith for himself or herself.
In the beginning of my Homily I started by asking the youth about this Millennium and they answered that it is the Millennium of the Youth. This Millennium has only two years; it is short as the duration of youth, but they will be responsible for it. And this is what Comboni did for us and hope his words permeate within us.
I have announced in the beginning that it the year of Comboni. I repeat it today, this is the beginning of the Comboni Year in our diocese, it begins today until next October the 10th. Throughout this time, we want to meditate on Comboni. Comboni is not yet known; neither by our priests or even by those who say that they are Comboni Missionaries. If they were to know Comboni, they would have preached to us about Comboni earlier and talked about his holiness to us earlier. Therefore, I ask you, Christians, whether you are a Jesuit or a White Father that this Church has Comboni as its foundation; you cannot ignore Comboni while living here. Comboni has drawn to us a path for us to walk through. I think there is not a single occasion in which we cannot see Comboni’s plans and ideas challenging us. He did it because he believed that God was the one who told him so and God accepted him for that.
I talked about Comboni evangelizing in the name of Jesus Christ, but Comboni also spoke about advancement, progress for the African people; Africans saving themselves. We want to repeat always save Africa by Africans. The meaning is that do you feel that you are an African and you want to save Africa. You are African, so save yourselves. We are going to meditate this word for a whole year not because it is a second program of the Archdiocese, it is coming out of the Archdiocesan Synod Program. To say, “Sudanese save Sudan” it is like the call of the President of Sudan to dress from what we manufactured and eat from what we grow. This is the Program of the Sudanese Congress for the future. In regard to us, I told the youth that the Youth Congress is not going to be a Congress of getting free things but rather a Congress of work of getting what you want and harvest from what you yourselves grow.
This program has begun from the time in which Sudanese priests increased in number and started building schools to educate people. I am sure everyone can say it was for real education. If education was to be taken from the hand of the Church, the provider, then men, women and children will grow on without having real weight in the society.
The idea in Sudan is that Christians do not have real weight in the society, not because they were prevented from it, but because we do not have the mental capacity to work with, that they are not accustomed to use their brains. This means that the work of Comboni has to touch everybody and everywhere. There are those who say, “We are going for pastoral work” and neglect education, I tell you what Comboni said, “Teach and educate Africans.” We must commit to education on the schools and even at the University level as we did with the schools of the Displaced. I had not even a penny when I opened these schools, I just depended on God and I said, “Let’s get started.” And we did it and now this University is going to materialize. We need the cooperation from people, but let those who are not in favor keep quiet. I want to make it as the policy of Comboni. The future of the Church is in the hands of the laity and not in the hands of clergy or sisters. The Church was in the hand of the laity in 1964 after the expulsion of Missionaries. Priests and the laity, teaching, evangelizing and strengthening people, they all ran it together. So it is your turn to stand up straight lay people. This Millennium is going to be your Millennium together with the youth in the Church, in politics, in governments. You must be faithful to your Christian faith and teachings. This is what we want so as to grow in our faith.
What Comboni preached was not an easy task. He is a man who also carried his Cross. Imagine for Comboni to cross the desert from Wadi Halfa to Halfa then Khartoum and then to El Obeid on a camel. He did not only that but he also visited the whole of Sudan; it is a sign of love for God. How many of us have this strong passion and offer it to God?
Comboni brought to us something new that is the holiness of life. The declaration of his saintly life came before the 5th of October. The meaning of this day is to declare to all the earth that he is holy so that any one may ask God through his intercession and take him as an example to go ahead in their Christian life. And this is what came out of our meditation of the great Jubilee: a call to holiness to all Christians. Young and elders priest, laity, because since we are the sons of God we have the duty to reach this state of holiness of life. If all Christians everywhere want to live a life of holiness, that will be a remarkable progress in the life of the Church. If things, our homes, society and the surroundings go backwards, it is because of lack of saints. Comboni help us with these problems. Others say holiness does not bring joy; our meditation will go on for the whole year along with the Synod. The plan and vision of Comboni is on the same line of the Synod. Comboni preached about holiness of life, evangelization, progress, unity and also cooperation, these are the priority concerns of the Synod and these issues where also a concern to Comboni.
When Comboni returned from Rome he said, “I left my heart among you; and I am here so as not to go away any more.” If you are with us Comboni will be with us and we are sure your prayers are for the progress of Sudan. Be with us in front of God and Jesus Christ as we continue to pray to him because this is his country. Even if he was not born here this is his country because he died here. We do not need to ask the intercession of anyone, Comboni is praying for us. If we were to write books on how Comboni has touched and changed our lives, there would not be library which could contain them. When people say Comboni is a saint, they are saying that the Church in the Sudan is holy. It is an honor that Comboni brought to us.
I would like to thank you for the celebration you offered me when I became a Cardinal. The importance is to know that in Sudan and Khartoum there is a Cardinal. Being a Cardinal, however, is not to be only on top while doing nothing. To be a Cardinal is a way for me to render better services to the Church towards progress. I still remain a Pastor, and hope on your help knowing that ahead something better is awaiting us. God is preparing it for us. Therefore, we have to say Alleluia even if we do not have the courage and we say it for thanksgiving.
Sr. Adele, thank you for your presence at this celebration. It is while since the Comboni Superior attends this special celebration of ours after events such as the beatification and now the canonization. This is inviting us to go together. I thank you very much for the wishes you have given, the hope you have given, I want to tell you something: that our numbers, your numbers are going down very frightening. May be after five years there will be no Comboni Sister or Comboni father here; or if they are here, they will have difficult time because of advanced aged. It is time for us to renew and to work for vocations. I but I am not saying only for the Comboni Missionaries, but also for other congregations. Many of whom pull out from their meaningful work because of old age; because they thought they had no body to replace them.
That kind of principle is going to build the church here; I am begun to begin to rely on the laity who will not leave the Church go down. If we priests begin to forget about our identity and live lives without meaning, become old or situations of this kind, lay people will be strong to work. We must work for vocations. I am telling this to the Missionaries and to the Sudanese Priests: We have to work for vacations, and the Pope says that in order to get vocations we must pray for vacations, and to get vocations we must live an authentic priestly life. Let us understand that any mistake in our lives --which we always justify as part of our humanity—is the kind of humanity that crucified Jesus Christ. We cannot be renewed; new vocations will not come unless we live meaningful lives. Imagine what would happen if we really live happy and fulfilling priestly lives. The Pope said, "a sad sister is a sad indeed, a sad priest is really sad." We must work for vocations! Let us take the example of Comboni. I am talking to you about vocations to priesthood and sisterhood. Everybody must work for vocations.
I am calling on the youth, their fathers and mothers. In Limone I told people, "You do not send your children to the seminary or to the convent because you say you have only one child. Comboni was the only surviving son to his parents out of eight." But Comboni heard the voice of God and said. "I am going to be a priest." And his father and mother, although having no other children told him, "If God calls you, you must go." Here, families have many children, we have plenty of youth, with are you going to do with them?

Omelia del Card. Gabriel Zubeir Wako

Mi rivolgo a voi giovani.
