Last weekend we had the opportunity to hold an online African meeting. Technical difficulties were not lacking, as we all know how difficult it is sometimes for the internet connection to reach correctly to many places of our beloved continent. Sometimes we even had to make up for this difficulty with imagination, there were those who made themselves present through WhatsApp audios that we were later able to share.

Con la memoria liturgica di Santa Teresa di Lisieux, proclamata da Papa Pio XI Patrona delle missioni al pari di San Francesco Saverio, si apre il mese di Ottobre, Mese Missionario, che vedrà domenica 24 la celebrazione della 95ma Giornata Missionaria Mondiale. Il tema scelto da Papa Francesco è tratto dagli Atti degli Apostoli: “Non possiamo tacere quello che abbiamo visto e ascoltato” (At 4,20).

Era il lontano 2005 nella missione di Rungu (RD Congo)… Durante le ore di scuola la piccola e simpatica Georgine per non restare sola a casa dalla zia veniva a trascorrere il suo tempo nel veranda della missione. Georgine aveva già l’età per andare a scuola, ma non poteva andarci perché era sordomuta e non poteva certo seguire le lezioni.

One day, while I was walking around the city, I saw the following sentence on a painted wall: “Trees do not eat their own fruits. Rivers do not drink their own waters. The wealth of gifts is always for the benefit of others.” I do not know the graffiti artist nor the original author of the sentence. However, it has been used many times by Pope Francis. This phrase leads me to a deeper reflection on vocation, from the beginning of vocational discernment until its daily living.

“Con la liberazione dei maggiori centri urbani, i gruppi armati concentrano la loro presenza nelle aree periferie e in alcune località dove commettono violenze” denuncia la Conferenza Episcopale della Repubblica Centrafricana nel messaggio pubblicato al termine del ritiro annuale nella città di Bouar, nell'ovest del Paese. “Quando arrivarono le forze armate centrafricane e i loro alleati, banditi e guerriglieri si ritirarono con armi e bagagli nella boscaglia. Quindi sono ancora fonte di insicurezza per il resto della popolazione” affermano i Vescovi.
John Kuk Baluang: “My vocation is to be a catechist”

John Kuk Baluang was born in 1951, in Gany a village of Jagei in Western Upper Nile. In 1970 he went to Khartoum. There he met some friends from his home village in Jagei, who were Catholics. They tried to convince him to go to the Church but he refused. Every Sunday, they invited him to the Church but he declined. But one day he did agree to go with them, just to please them and out of curiosity. He liked the prayers, the teaching, and the people of the Church. He decided to become Catholic. At the beginning of 1974 he joined the catechumenate. He was baptised on 17 September, 1974. He was confirmed on 19 December, 1974.
