“Nel 2006, in vista della preparazione del 150° anniversario della Società delle missioni africane (SMA), i confratelli incaricati dei mass-media in Europa si sono riuniti per produrre una rivista comune, in formato digitale, in modo che ogni entità SMA potesse tradurla, aggiungendovi le informazioni legate al proprio Paese, per poi stamparla e diffonderla. Fu un esperimento riuscito che ci ha fatto vedere che era possibile fare qualcosa a livello internazionale. Durante l'Assemblea Generale della SMA nel 2007 è stata decisa la creazione di un Centro internazionale di comunicazione per l'Istituto. La casa madre di Lione aveva i locali e gli archivi audiovisivi necessari per iniziare questa esperienza”, spiega P. Gérard Sagnol, SMA francese, che presenta questo nuovo servizio, la cui sede è a Lione, in Francia, sulla rivista SMAnotizie di dicembre scorso.

“O contexto hodierno da missão – escreve o P. Estêvão Raschietti, missionário xaveriano italiano, que trabalha há mais de 20 anos no Brasil – não é mais aquele do nosso Fundador ou da nossa Fundadora, nem aquele dos arquétipos de nossa imaginação, nem o destemido de épocas relativamente recentes. A missão não está mais para a romântica aventura, o generoso improviso, o impávido heroísmo: muito menos para o irresponsável despacho de sujeitos incômodos e problemáticos. Pelo contrário, o paradigma da missão leva hoje a vida religiosa consagrada (VRC) como um todo e a partir de dentro, a um profundo, radical e essencial repensamento de suas estruturas, de sua compreensão, de suas relações, de seus projetos e de seus horizontes, assim como é proposto pelo Documento de Aparecida ao conjunto de dioceses, paróquias, comunidades, movimentos e instituições das Igrejas latino-americanas e caribenhas.”

The Comboni missionaries from seven provinces of English-speaking Africa and Mozambique (APDESAM) gathered from 5th to 10th September 2016 in Pretoria for a workshop on Urban Ministry. They were joined by four lay women from two urban parishes of the Comboni missionaries in South Africa. Fr. Mariano Tibaldo represented the Curia of Rome. “We all thank the facilitators as well as the community of Pretoria for making this workshop a success. God bless you all”, said the organizers of the meeting.

Forty Comboni Missionaries and Comboni Sisters stationed in the provinces of Europe took part in the Limone Symposium 2016, an event organized by the European Group of Theological Reflection that took place at St. Daniel Comboni’s birthplace on the shores of Lake Garda in Limone, Italy from March 29 to April 2. The topic for this year was, “Migration and Mission.” Refugees ad migrants must be treated s brothers and sisters and seen as an opportunity for building a more pluralistic society and for strengthening inter-religious dialogue. The European Union should stop the sale of weapons and should instead foster an end to injustice and war. What follows is the Statement of the Comboni Family, signed by the participants of the Symposium.

The paper “The Preferential Choice of the Poor and Social Commitment in the Institute of the Comboni Missionaries”, written by Fr. Mariano Tibaldo [in the picture], has been inspired by the 50th anniversary of the Pact of the Catacombs (6 November 1965) and analyses the significance that the Comboni Institute gives to ‘poverty’, the identity of the poor vis-à-vis evangelization ad gentes and the process by which, in the Comboni reflection, the poor are transformed from ‘privileged reference persons’ into subjects of the mission; Finally, the article analyses the relationship between social work and evangelization. This text takes into account the main documents of the Institute from 1969 to 2015. The Chapter Acts of 1969 and 1975 are those of the Sons of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (FSCJ), that is, with an Italian majority of members.

Last Friday ended the 86th Biannual Assembly of the Union of Superiors General (USG). The theme of the assembly was “To embrace the future with hope. The consecrated persons on a journey with the people of God”. The participants – including the Superior General of the Comboni Missionaries, Fr. Tesfaye Tadesse Gebresilasie –, meeting from 25 to 27 November at the Salesianum in Rome, reflected on the recent Synod on the family and elected the new president of the USG, in the person of Fra’ Mauro Jöhri, minister general of the Capuchin friars minor. Fra’ Jöhri succeeded Fr. Adolfo Nicolás Pachón, superior general of the Society of Jesus. Pictures: ANS.
