On the occasion of the celebration of the feast day of St. Daniel Comboni, October 10, a new biography of the founder of the Comboni Missionary family is being published. It is titled, San Daniele Comboni – Profeta delle Missioni d’Africa (St. Daniel Comboni – the Prophet of the African Missions). “Over 150 years from the publication of the “Plan for the Regeneration of Africa by Africa” the proposal of St. Daniel Comboni is still relevant. It is still the hour of Africa, the hour of mission. Hopefully, this biography will find many readers who will in turn become authentic mission promoters wherever they may be and whatever they will be doing.”

Saints are people who defy the mentality of their times, because they are aiming at the future. In other words, they are always relevant. This is one of the reasons why a new biography of St. Daniel Comboni, who was canonized in 2003, is being published now. It is the work of the versatile Graziano Pesenti, it is not too long and it is easy to read. It goes to the essence of things without reducing or betraying the value of San Daniel Comboni’s experience and message.

Over 150 years from the publication of the “Plan for the Regeneration of Africa by Africa” the proposal of St. Daniel Comboni is still relevant.

It is still the hour of Africa, the hour of mission. Hopefully, this biography will find many readers who will in turn become authentic mission promoters wherever they may be and whatever they will be doing. If at all possible, may the follow St. Daniel Comboni as missionaries.

May this “life of Comboni” make our lives more mission-oriented.
