On Saturday the 26th of April, a congregation of about 50 people gathered to celebrate the renewal of vows of our 14 Comboni scholastics in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Tomety Yawo Emile and Kpekpe Kossi Pascal from Togo, Musiime Joseph Mukasa, Bakalu Frank and Rutaremwa Cleophas from Uganda, Duku Lumago Thomas Eugenio and Oliha Emmanuel Felix from South Sudan, Mwachande Jacob Msanjama and Gerald Paul Hieronimo from Malawi, Phiri Steven from Zambia, Ts’ooana Karabo April from Lesotho, Ramos Alberto from Mozambique and Tasson Rodríguez Luis Omar from Peru, declared before the Provincial Superior of the hosting Province, South Africa, Fr. John Baptist Opargiw, their commitment to renewing the vows of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience for one more year.

Alongside Fr. John Baptist the presiding celebrant at Mass, the two formators, Frs. Jospeh Maku and Aldo Sierra, the Parish Priest of the hosting parish of St. Joan of Arc, Fr. Endrias Shamena and two Dominican Friars, Fr. Neil and Fr. Michael were concelebrating at the altar. The renewal of vows was witnessed by 20 friends and other seminarians who came to join the celebration, highlighting like this, the ecclesial character of the ceremony.

In his words, Fr. John Baptist reminded us that we are in the paschal time, a time that expresses the fullness of life in Christ, he also spoke about the importance of putting into practice what was declared in the formula of renewal read by each of the Scholastics, whereby they expressed in different beautiful ways, mainly in the form of a prayer, why they desire to renew their religious vows.

After the liturgical celebration in the church, that was well animated by African joyful hymns, we moved on to the hall to have a moment of agape and sharing of meals, concluding like this the celebration in a very fraternal way. May the Lord continue to guide our young confreres in the ideal and the passion for the mission, especially, by being true disciples of Christ with a special love for the poor and most abandoned. May St. Daniel Comboni intercede for us all!
