The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral governance of the Diocese of Sarh in Chad (Central Africa), presented by Bishop Miguel Ángel Sebastián Martínez, the Vatican Press Office announced today. Bishop Miguel Ángel turned 75 on 28 September 2025, at which point he submitted his resignation to Pope Leo XIV.
The Spanish-born Comboni missionary was appointed Bishop of Laï, in Chad, on 28 November 1998 and ordained on 14 February 1999. On 30 January 2014, he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Doba, in the same country, a role he held until 18 February 2017. Pope Francis appointed Bishop Miguel Ángel as Bishop of Sarh on 10 October 2018, and he was installed a month later.
Bishop Miguel Ángel has served the Church in Chad for almost half a century, first as a priest and later as a bishop.
“Your episcopal ministry has been marked by generosity, faith, and a spirit of service, through an attentive and fatherly presence, capable of offering guidance, a listening ear, and closeness to so many people. Your dedication has been an authentic sign of communion, hope, and Gospel witness for the Christian community and for all who have had the joy of meeting you,” writes the Superior General of the Comboni Missionaries, Father Luigi Codianni, in his message of thanks to the Bishop Emeritus of Sarh.
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Fr Jean Miguina, OFM Cap, as the new Bishop of Sarh. Until now, he was responsible for the Capuchin aspirants in Chad and served as a Counsellor of the Custody of the Capuchin Friars Minor of Chad and the Central African Republic.
