In Pace Christi

Fr. Cyril Charles Norman Eyles, who had been ill with cancer for some time, died in the early hours of Wednesday 5^th September 2001. Bishop Crispian Hollis of Portsmouth, officiated at the funeral held on 12^th September in the Parish of St. George’s in Buckland where Fr. Cyril had latterly been serving as parish priest.

Cyril was born in London on 19^th September 1932. On completing his schooling Cyril served for a time in the British Army after which he took up teaching firstly in England then on Ascension Island, then on to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and finally for eleven years in Uganda (1966-1977).

Cyril had converted to Catholicism at the age of 26. He first got to know our Institute in 1968 while working in education in Northern Uganda – particularly at the schools of Layibi and Koboko.

Mr. Eyles - as he then was - left Uganda in 1977 with the intention of dedicating his life to God and the service of the missions. After a brief postulancy at Dawson Place, he was accepted into the novitiate in Ardrossan (Scotland) in 1978 and made his first profession in the junior seminary at Mirfield on 9^th September 1979.

Since Cyril was a late vocation he was sent to do his theology at the Beda College in Rome (1979-1982). He seems to have enjoyed life at Via Luigi Lilio and he certainly proved himself an able student at the Beda. He made his perpetual vows on the 9^th September 1982 and was ordained to the Diaconate on the 21^st January 1983. Cyril’s ordination to the priesthood at Rickmansworth on the 21^st May 1983 at the age of 51 marked an important change in his life.

Following ordination Fr. Cyril had two brief spells back in Africa, working in the field of education: firstly in Khartoum (1984) and secondly in Uganda (1988/9). Unfortunately neither helped him to settle and Fr. Cyril began to suspect that the missionary life might not really be for him. He returned to the London Province in 1989 and, after spending some time regaining his health and undertaking pastoral work in England (though outside our communities), he decided along with his superiors that his future lay at home rather than abroad.

Fr. Cyril lived out of community from 1991 until his death. During most of that period he served as a priest in the diocese of Portsmouth and all bar one of those years as parish priest at St. George’s, Buckland.

Ill-health had been a matter of concern to Fr. Cyril for some time and more especially since May 1999 when he underwent an operation for the removal of a malignant growth in the bladder. It was a secondary cancer that finally took Fr. Cyril to his heavenly reward in September 2001. May he rest in peace. We thank the Lord for the gift that Cyril was to the missions, to our Institute and to the Local Church in England and Wales.            Fr. Martin James Devenish, mccj

P. Cyril Charles Norman Eyles, ammalato di cancro da tempo, è morto nelle prime ore di mercoledì 5 settembre 2001. Mons. Crispian Hollis, vescovo di Portsmouth, ha presenziato ai funerali celebrati il 12 settembre nella parrocchia di S. Giorgio in Buckland, dove ultimamente P. Cyril svolgeva il suo ministero.

Cyril era nato a Londra il 19 settembre 1932. Completati gli studi, si arruolò nell’esercito inglese e si dedicò all'insegnamento prima in Inghilterra, poi nell'Isola dell’Ascensione, in Rodesia (ora Zimbabwe) e infine in Uganda dove insegnò per ben undici anni (1966-1977).

Cyril si era convertito al cattolicesimo all’età di 26 anni. Il suo primo impatto con il nostro Istituto avvenne nel 1968 mentre si occupava dell’insegnamento, specialmente nelle scuole di Layibi e Koboko nel nord dell’Uganda.

Mister Eyles, come era conosciuto allora, lasciò l’Uganda nel 1977 con l’intenzione di dedicare la propria vita a Dio ed al servizio della missione. Dopo un breve periodo di postulato a Dawson Place, fu accettato nel noviziato di Ardrossan (Scozia) nel 1978 e fece la sua prima professione nel seminario minore di Mirfield il giorno 8 settembre 1979.

Essendo una vocazione tardiva, Cyril fu mandato a Roma al Beda College per la teologia (1979-1982). Sembra che si sia trovato bene in Via Luigi Lilio e certamente si dimostrò un bravo studente al Beda. Pronunciò i voti perpetui il 9 settembre 1982 e fu ordinato diacono il 21 gennaio 1983. La sua ordinazione sacerdotale a Rickmansworth il 21 maggio 1983 all’età di 51 anni segnò una svolta importante nella sua vita.

P. Cyril

Dopo l’ordinazione P. Cyril passò due brevi periodi in Africa lavorando nel campo dell’insegnamento: prima a Khartoum (1984) e poi in Uganda (1988-89). Sfortunatamente nessuna delle due esperienze gli offrì la possibilità di sentirsi a suo agio e P. Cyril cominciò a dubitare che la vita missionaria fosse veramente per lui. Nel 1989 ritornò nella sua provincia dove trascorse un periodo per recuperare le forze e per il lavoro pastorale in Inghilterra (fuori, però, di comunità). D'accordo coi superiori decise che il suo futuro si sarebbe svolto in patria piuttosto che in missione.

P. Cyril è vissuto fuori comunità dal 1991 fino alla morte. Per la maggior parte di questo periodo prestò il suo servizio sacerdotale, se si eccettua un anno, nella parrocchia di S. Giorgio, Buckland, nella diocesi di Portsmouth.

Da tempo P. Cyril aveva problemi di salute e nel maggio 1999 subì un’operazione per rimuovere un tumore maligno alla prostata. Fu però un cancro secondario che portò P. Cyril alla celeste ricompensa il 5 settembre del 2001.
