The participation of sixteen Comboni Missionaries and Sisters at the 12th edition of the World Social Forum in Montreal (9-14 August 2016) made it possible to meet many brothers and sisters from various nations who pursue the dream of another world, different from the present, sustainable and inclusive, just and at peace. We believe that participation in the Forum is a sign of fidelity to the charism of our founder, St. Daniel Comboni, who fought for the liberation from slavery and the regeneration of Africa. [...]

The question that I have heard more often during the World Social Forum is: “What can we do from here?”. Organising for the first time the forum in the North highlighted the distance that still exists with the global South. In this rich city in Quebec, during high season, we missed words and thoughts from the South, especially from Africa and Asia. The Canadian borders’ policy has not granted the right of people to travel and to meet. As it is known, at least 250 entry visas requested from foreign participants to the Forum have been rejected. “We are carrying ideas, not bombs”, said the human rights’activist Aminata Traoré, previously minister of culture in Mali and candidate to succeed to Ban Ki-moon as UN Secretary General. The World Social Forum (WSF) will take place this year in Montreal, Quebec, Canada from 9 to 14 of August. The WSF 2016 seeks to gather tens of thousands of people from groups in civil society, organizations and social movements who want to build a sustainable and inclusive world, where every person and every people has its place and can make its voice heard. The WSF is “an open meeting place for reflective thinking, democratic debate of ideas, formulation of proposals, free exchange of experiences and interlinking for effective action, by groups and movements of civil society”. Thirteen Comboni Missionaries and two Comboni Sisters will participate in the event as “Comboni Network” and will present some workshops on topics related to issues of social and environmental justice. “Distruggere i barconi degli scafisti nelle acque libiche e bloccare così l’esodo dei profughi. Le intenzioni sono ben chiare: è guerra! Chi pagherà questo protagonismo bellico italiano? Dobbiamo chiedere invece alla UE e all’Italia di imporre un embargo sulla vendita di armi ai ‘signori della guerra’ in Libia. Chiediamo altresì alla Unione Europea (UE) perché faccia pressione sulla Tunisia e sull’Egitto perché questi due paesi confinanti aprano le loro frontiere per accogliere i rifugiati intrappolati in Libia. Ma la UE dovrà poi concordare con l’Egitto e la Tunisia l’apertura dei corridoi umanitari per permettere ai rifugiati di arrivare in Europa. Questa sì sarebbe una vera soluzione per i profughi e segnerebbe la sconfitta degli scafisti e delle organizzazioni criminali”, scrive Alex Zanotelli, missionario comboniano.

Comboni Message from the World Social Forum 2015. “After two years, the World Social Forum (WSF) has returned to Tunis in a context of growing instability and violence in North African Countries and the Middle East. The WSF set out to be a sign of peace and hope for the process of the “Arab Spring” which has been threatened by terrorism and runs the risk of being perverted by religious fundamentalism and repressive governments. The WSF participants have repudiated “every form of terrorism”, including the arrogance of militarism and the systemic violence of a homicidal economy.” […]

We are approaching the end of the World Social Forum 2015 in Tunis. The chilly and windy weather disturbed the participation and the attendance to the different conferences and this was affected by the unfavorable atmospheric condition, but as Comboni Network we tried our best to be present in them. The World Social Forum ends today with the assemblies of convergence and the March final in the afternoon. Tomorrow, the day will be dedicated to the Comboni Forum that aims to share the challenges that the WSF present to the missionary pastoral activity in the countries and continents where they minister.
