The European Group for Theological Reflection (GERT), composed of a number of Combonian missionaries working in the old continent, belonging to the circumscriptions of Portugal, Spain, the German-speaking Province, the London Province, Italy and the General Curia, and personally interested in theological and pastoral issues related to their missionary context, met in Brixen/Brixen from 12th to 16th February.

The reflection began with a biblical look at creation. We revisited the various ‘creation narratives’ found in the Bible and emphasised how these narratives are not intended to give us a chronology or historical reading of past events, but rather emphasise aspects of the relationship between God and creation, and, by extension, the relationships between creatures. This awareness has a bearing on our missionary ministry in Europe in terms of supporting paths of community regeneration and conflict resolution, in order to imitate God’s own creative capacity in our practical living.

We then addressed the issue of multiculturalism and its obvious impact on the kind of presence we must have as religious in our local Churches. This area also requires our attention and our important contribution. The experience we have had in other countries – where we were guests of other cultures – requires us to share with the local Churches the need for encounter, dialogue, welcome and fresh reflection on our faith.

Finally, we concluded our work by reflecting on the ‘climate crisis’ and its impact on evangelisation. It is a matter of supporting the birth of a new culture and ‘other’ vision of the world. Building the Kingdom of God today can only pass through the formation of a new mentality, capable of taking into account our ‘conversion’ to respect for nature and God’s plan for the cosmos. In this, we are guided by the Magisterium of the Church, especially by the teaching of Pope Francis.

The discussion of the various texts presented to the group was fruitful. Now, the various authors – strengthened by the suggestions received – will be able to prepare the final versions of their contributions and share them with the Comboni Family in Europe.
