Rome, Monday, 24 September 2012
On the 9th of September, the Comboni Province of South Africa handed over the Parish of Sacred Heart of Mount Frere to the Diocese of Kokstad. The Parish that was served from 1892-1989 by the Franciscan Order (OFM) and by the Comboni Missionaries from 1990 to 2012, for the first time in its history was entrusted to a Diocesan Priest (son of the soil) to become the parish priest. The Bishop Stanislaw Jan Dziuba, Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Kokstad, presided at the Eucharist. In the photo: Bishop Stanislaw and Fr. The celebration of the handing over was colourfully prepared by Fr. Mariano Pérez González, Comboni missionary, and the parish community. The People sang and danced filled with emotion to express their joy and sadness.

Present at the celebration were: Bishop Stanislaw Jan Dziuba, O.S.P.P.E.,(1) the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Kokstad, who presided over the Eucharist; Fr. Mariano Pérez, the last Comboni Parish Priest of Mount Frere; Major Zanemvula, the new Parish Priest of Mount Frere; Fr. Lizo Nontshe; Fr. Robert Ochola Lukwiya, who served for four and half years in Mount Frere; Fr. Melese Tumato Shulla, who served for half a year; and Bro. Engelhardt Hermann, who worked there for 12 years. And lastly three  Diocesan Priests from Spain – Fr. Ramon, Fr. Serafin and Fr. Pedro who were on a visit – friends of Fr. Mariano.

The church was filled to capacity. The People showed their love to the Comboni Missionaries with songs and traditional dances before, during and after the Mass. In his Homily Bishop Dziuba thanked all the Comboni Missionaries who worked in Mount Frere with selfless efforts to bring the good news of Christ to that community. He mentioned the names of all the Comboni Missionaries who worked in Mount Frere and thanked them for their total dedication to serve the people of God in this part of the country. After the celebration of the Eucharist, the message sent from Rome by our Provincial Superior, Fr. Jeremias dos Santos Martins, was read by Fr. Robert Ochola. “Kumnandi ukudibana, kubuhlungu ukwahlukana” (It is good to come together but it is painful to separate) was the common expression of the People of Mount Frere on the day of the handing over of the Parish. On the same day the Comboni Community of Mount Frere was officially closed.
