The XVIII General Chapter of the Comboni Missionaries on the theme “Comboni missionary disciples called to live the joy of the Gospel in today’s world” takes place from 6 September to 4 October at the General House in Rome. With a sense of gratitude we would like to thank the confreres for their prayer and encouragement in our work at the Chapter, in a special way those who sent us messages of support. At present we are at a very important time in our Chapter journey. It started last week with the selection of three fundamental areas upon which to reflect: Mission, Person and Reorganization. The choice of these three themes emerged through dialogue in the continents’ groups and then approved by the assembly.

On the theme of Mission
it has been underlined  the challenge to us
by the Evangelii gaudium which invites us
to be a ‘Church going forth’
so as to be closer to the least,
the lost and the last.

Each delegate was called to choose the theme of his preference and for which he felt more competent. Three study groups were formed. Last Friday, the members of  each group  started to work with the aim of preparing a short paper with some essential points related to the chosen theme.  Back in the assembly each group presented its work to be debated by the delegates who brought questions for clarifications and enriched the text.

On the theme of Mission it has been underlined  the challenge to us by the Evangelii gaudium which invites us to be a ‘Church going forth’ so as to be closer to the least, the lost and the last. The ‘new model’ of mission compels us to review our activities: the academic specializations of the confreres must be oriented to the urgent needs of evangelization. The commitment to reconciliation, justice, peace and care for creation is an integral part of announcing the Gospel.

As for the theme regarding the Person, in its presentation the group identified the growing internationalization of our institute. This aspect requires a basic formation which can help us to welcome the gift and the challenge of multiculturality in a spirit of dialogue and mutual respect. It has been felt the need of nourishing interpersonal relationships of friendship and mutual support in our communities as a witness to the good news of the Gospel.

Coming to the theme of the Reorganization, the group highlighted the challenges of the ‘new model’ of the mission and the decreasing number of  the members in our institute. These challenges make us more aware of the fact that we need a structural reorganization starting from the communities on the ground up to  the level of provinces, continent and general administration. A reorganization will help us to render a better qualified service to the Church and society.

Now the three groups have the task of reworking  their original texts in a new draft, keeping in mind the suggestions given them during the debate in the assembly.
