The 10th of April 2016 turned out to be a great day for the Comboni Missionaries and the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar: three scholastics, Abraham Sireu Ang’Irotum, Benjamin Avoga and Ahiro David Khayesi were ordained deacons. The colourful Eucharistic ceremony was presided over by Msgr. Dominic Kimengichi, assisted by Fr. Joseph Maina, provincial superior of Kenya, by several priests both diocesan and missionaries, among whom the Combonis working in Lokichar, Amakuriat and Kacheliba.

The many Christians, drawn from various parts of Lodwar diocese and other parts of the country, converged at the Risen Christ Nakwamekwi Parish to witness the deaconate ordination.

Abraham Sireu Ang’Irotum, from Amakuriat parish in West Pokot, made his missionary service in Kacheliba. Abraham is the first Pokot to be ordained after over 30 years of Combonis presence in the area. He did his studies in Lima-Peru and has taken his final vows on the 3rd of April.

Benjamin Avoga, from Kisii diocese, made his missionary service in the parish of Amakuriat, Pokot area, and made his final vows on the 27th of March. Benjamin did his theological studies in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ahiro David Khayesi, originally from the parish of Kakamega, made his missionary service in Nakwamekwi, Lodwar area. David took his final vows on the 6th April. He also did his studies with Abraham in Lima, Peru.

The celebration was quite remarkable as the Pokot and the Turkana, two communities perpetually in conflict, freely and joyfully celebrated together. This goes down to history as the day that the Pokot and the Turkana sang praises to God and danced together in jubilation and thanksgiving to God for the ordination of their three sons.

In his last remarks the bishop thanked the Comboni Missionaries for the good work in the vineyard of the Lord and also the parents of the three deacons for their generosity in allowing their children to follow their dreams to serve the Lord.
