Last weekend, Comboni scholastic Mikozama Bienvenu Clemy was ordained a deacon. The celebration took place in the parish church of St Anne, in Isiro, Democratic Republic of Congo. The new deacon was born in Brazzaville in 1993, and is the first – and so far, the only – Comboni missionary from the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville), a country where there are no Comboni Family communities.

When Clemy met the Comboni missionaries and asked to join the Institute, he was not sure of the answer, because we do not usually accept candidates from countries where there is no Comboni presence. But given the proximity between Brazzaville and Kinshasa, the two closest capitals in the world – they are separated only by the Congo River – his application was accepted.

Clemy made his novitiate in Sarh (Chad) and took his first vows on 13th May 2018. After finishing his theology studies in Cape Coast (Ghana) in 2022, he was sent to the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a few months, Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, will witness the first priestly ordination of a Comboni missionary.

Through the intercession of Saint Daniel Comboni, we pray for the missionary life of Deacon Mikozama Bienvenu Clemy, that his consecration may give impetus to the knowledge of the Comboni charism in the Republic of Congo.
