Friday, June 20, 2025 Celebration of Faith in Uganda: A Successful Consecration of the Merciful Love of Jesus Cathedral
On a day that will be etched into the hearts and minds of our community, The Merciful Love of Jesus Cathedral Church in Moroto Diocese, in northeastern part of Uganda, was joyously consecrated on Saturday, 24th May 2025, marking a significant milestone in our journey of faith. The ceremony, attended by parishioners from all over the diocese and neighbouring ones, religious men and women, community leaders, and honoured guests – of special mention, Her Excellency, Hon Jessica Alupo, the Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, and the Italian Ambassador in Uganda – was a beautiful testament to our commitment to spiritual growth, unity, and service.

The event commenced with a joyful procession and opening of the Cathedral doors led by His Excellency, the papal nuncio to Uganda, Rt Rev. Luigi Bianco, accompanied by seven bishops; Rt. Rev. Damiano Guzzetti (Moroto Diocese), Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Obbo (Tororo Archdiocese), Rt. Rev. Dominic Eibu (Kotido Diocese), Rt. Rev. Eciru Joseph Oliach (Soroti Catholic Diocese), Rt. Rev. Sabino Ochan Odoki (Arua Diocese), Rt. Rev. Giuseppe Filippi (Emeritus of Kotido), Rt. Rev. Odama John Baptist (Emeritus of Gulu) and scores of local clergy and the lay faithful. The air was filled with a palpable sense of reverence and excitement, as thousands gathered to witness this sacred occasion. The church, adorned with flowers and draped in vibrant banners, transformed into a living tapestry of faith, hope, and community.

During the consecration, the nuncio delivered a heartfelt homily about the importance of this cathedral-church as a sanctuary for worship, fellowship, and outreach. He emphasised that this new cathedral, which has replaced Regina Mundi Cathedral, is more than just a physical structure; it is a place and a sign of the presence of God among his people, a place where friendships are formed, lives are changed, and God’s love is shared. He also said that the cathedral is the church of the bishop, mother of all the churches of the diocese and in it the Church of Christ – which is one, holy, catholic and apostolic – is present and lives. The congregation listened intently, reflecting on the many blessings our Church has brought into their lives.

Following the homily, the consecration rite took place, wherein sacred blessings were bestowed upon the church, and the holy altar was dedicated to serve as the focal point of worship through anointing with chrism oil; the anointing was also done on the walls of the church. The rite included the sprinkling with holy water to symbolise new life and purification, the lighting of candles, and the blessing of the tabernacle.

The musical accompaniment throughout the Eucharistic sacrifice, provided by our talented choir and musicians, filled the church with uplifting hymns and sacred melodies, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere of the day. The congregation joined in harmony, creating an inspiring chorus of voices that echoed the joy of the occasion.

Many expressed their gratitude for the tireless efforts of all who contributed to the church’s completion, from the funders, builders and designers to the volunteers who dedicated countless hours, months and years to make this dream a reality.
