From 5th to 7th August, the provincial assembly of Comboni missionaries in Mexico was held in Xochimilco, preceded by five days of spiritual exercises. The assembly offered participants the opportunity to analyse in depth the various services they perform in the country.
During the five days of spiritual exercises, led by Sister María del Socorro Becerra, a member of the Institute of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Word, participants reflected on the theme of God’s love and tenderness through his Word and his constant presence, with the Sacred Heart of Jesus as point of reference.
The actual assembly began on the morning of the 5th, with the presentation of a theme of ongoing formation by Dr Velia Rangel, who helped those present to redefine the meaning of everything that may seem like a “failure”, a loss, a moment of weakness, crisis or moral collapse, mourning or death, inviting them to “read” their own history and look at such difficult moments with an attitude of hope. The afternoon of the same day and the entire following day were devoted to observing and analysing the activities of the various sectors (missionary animation, evangelisation, formation, etc.), with particular emphasis on economics.
The day ended with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Monsignor Juan María Huerta, the new bishop of Xochimilco. The third and final day was devoted to reflection on the upcoming elections, as the term of office of the current provincial superior and his council will end on 31st December.
The dialogue was profound and sincere, with hope, trust, closeness and serenity emerging as the most deeply felt desires and sentiments at this time. It is hoped that these will also be the desires and sentiments of the next provincial council.
On a joyful note, celebrations have been planned for four Mexican confrères who are celebrating their 25th anniversary of priestly ordination this year. They are Fathers Víctor Alejandro Mejía, Lauro Betancourt, Armando Máximo, and Aldo Sierra.
