From 4th to 6th September, the provincial superiors of the Comboni Missionaries from Spain, Portugal, Italy, the London Province, and the German-speaking Province met in Rome, together with Father Zagaja Adaml, representative of the Vicar General in Poland, and Father Radol Austine Odhiambo, General Assistant responsible for overseeing the European circumscriptions.
The purpose of the meeting was to share experiences, reflect on current developments, and implement in Europe the common guidelines formulated by the General Chapter three years ago. Against the backdrop of the various ecclesial and political contexts of each circumscription, discussions focused on how, despite differences, it is possible to walk together along common paths.
Special attention was given to the new “formation communities” established in recent years in Austria (Graz), Portugal (Maia), and Spain (Granada). The group agreed that a solid command of the language is essential for theological studies and that young scholastics should be given sufficient time to learn it properly. It was also acknowledged that obtaining visas for students remains a significant challenge, often lengthy and arduous.
The superiors also reported on Holy Year celebrations organised in their respective countries. Particularly praised – and considered a great success – was the ‘Youth Jubilee’ held at the Curia community in Rome, financially supported by all the circumscriptions.
In addition to pastoral projects, the work of the various sectors and secretariats was reviewed, both at the circumscription and continental levels, covering mission, formation, and finance.
A major concern was the integration of the pressing issue of refugees and migrants into the commitments of the circumscriptions. It was recognised that, due to limited personnel resources, approaches vary between circumscriptions. In some provinces, individual confrères take personal initiatives, while in Italy several communities actively welcome and accompany refugees. There is also a well-established team coordinating and developing this work at the provincial level.
Considering that half of the European provincial superiors present in Rome will complete their mandates at the end of the year, after six years of service, it was also important to take a look at the ongoing provincial elections.
The meeting concluded with a reflection on how to present, at the upcoming Intercapitular Assembly – scheduled from 7th to 27th September – the joint report of the European circumscriptions.
