With hearts full of gratitude and to the rhythm of drums played by the scouts, the Santa Bakhita Centre in Arbawnus, Egypt, joyfully celebrated its Silver Jubilee on 14th September 2025, commemorating 25 years since the purchase of the land on which the centre stands. From the very beginning, the centre has been dedicated to serving Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees through its educational and pastoral activities. [In the picture: Mons. Claudio Lurati, mccj

The celebration began with a solemn Mass, presided over by Mons. Claudio Lurati, Apostolic Vicar of Alexandria in Egypt, in the presence of numerous Comboni missionaries and Comboni missionary sisters, as well as a lively community of Sudanese and South Sudanese faithful, together with many long-time friends and supporters of the Centre.

During the festivities, the organizing committee recalled the most significant moments in the Centre’s history, highlighting how God’s hand has guided its growth in faith and true communion over the past twenty-five years.

A particularly fitting biblical passage was chosen to reflect the true meaning of the Centre’s quarter-century of life: “So the Churches were strengthened in the faith and grew in number daily” (Acts 16:5).

It was especially moving to witness the presence of some individuals who have been part of the centre since its earliest days—a living testimony to the community’s faithfulness and perseverance.

The day was marked by profound joy and hopeful confidence shared by all participants, who were able to witness how God has indeed walked with them throughout the journey.

Today, the Centre faces new challenges, primarily due to the displacement of many community members following the outbreak of the ongoing war in Sudan. Nevertheless, the Jubilee celebration served as a strong reminder of God’s constant presence and a clear testimony to the community’s unwavering faith, confident that this presence will continue in the future.
