Comboni missionaries in Europe live in nine different countries. The languages and cultures are also diverse. However, there are also similarities, cultural movements and social events that spring from a common source. To respond to the challenges that this reality poses to missionary commitment, the Comboni missionaries have developed some tools for reflection and deeper understanding.

First, there is the European Group for Theological Reflection (GERT). This group consists of members of the Comboni family from all European circumscriptions who address research topics based on their specific expertise. Almost all GERT members have an academic background and university teaching experience. The results of their research are published and circulated among the members of the Comboni family.

A second instrument of reflection is the Limone Symposium. This is a biannual event held in Limone sul Garda, the birthplace of St. Daniel Comboni. In the past, the symposium addressed topics such as the new evangelisation in Europe, the issue of migrants, synodality and mission, and others.

On 29th September, members of GERT and a representative of the Italian mission secretariat met in Rome to plan the future work of these two groups. After sharing the work done and the goals set for the future, it was decided that the European mission secretariat and GERT would collaborate in organising future symposia.

The aim is to continue the reflection on mission carried out by GERT and, at the same time, to continue to engage in dialogue with competent voices from outside the Comboni Institute, as happens during the symposium in Limone. We intend to grow in our understanding of our times, of the social and ecclesial issues affecting Europe, and thus to act promptly to proclaim the Gospel and promote peace, justice and the integrity of creation.
