On 2nd February, on the occasion of the World Day of Consecrated Life, the Comboni Missionaries, together with confrères, friends and benefactors, gathered in Manila to celebrate the perpetual profession of Scholastic Diego Martín Mercado Sandoval [on the left in the photo]. Diego carried out his period of missionary service in our delegation for almost a year.
We thank God that our youngest confrère has consecrated his life forever to the service of the missions.
During the homily, the Delegate Superior, Fr Víctor Manuel Aguilar Sánchez, emphasised that total self-giving to the mission is the very essence of our calling as Comboni Missionaries of the Heart of Jesus. He added that our primary commitment is the proclamation of the Gospel among the poorest and most abandoned human groups on the different continents of the world, drawing inspiration and strength from a deep and tender devotion to the pierced Heart of Jesus. Sustained by the love of this Heart, we are determined to share with these most abandoned brothers and sisters living on the margins of society the “Good News” of the Kingdom, in view of an authentic human promotion.
Fr Manuel also wished to remind both Diego and the confrères, as well as all those present at the celebration, that our consecration is “for life” (ad vitam), lived beyond the boundaries of our countries of origin (ad extra), dedicated to the service of the poor (ad pauperes), and directed to all peoples, particularly non-Christians (ad gentes). He concluded: “These are the fundamental elements that define our vocation and missionary identity. Today, Diego Martín presents himself as a living witness who embodies and gives concrete expression to our Comboni charism.”
