On Thursday, 12th March, the presentation of the latest book published by Mundo Negro Publishing House, Insumisos. A Mixed Couple in Post-Apartheid South Africa, took place at the headquarters of the Comboni Missionaries in Madrid. [In Italian, the title can mean “rebels”, “insubordinate individuals”, or “conscientious objectors”]

The book recounts the lives of Hazel and her husband Phillip, for whom racial difference, in a country such as South Africa, did not prevent them from forming a mixed family, breaking down barriers and building bridges of understanding. Through the lives of its protagonists, the book retraces some of the most decisive historical moments in South Africa’s recent history.

Alongside Father Jaime Pi Calvera, director of Mundo Negro Publishing House, and José Carlos Rodríguez Soto, the author of the book, Hazel and Phillip also took part via an online connection from South Africa. Father Calvera opened the event a brief introduction to the new publication, part of the “Testimonios” series. This collection also includes other successful testimonial works, such as the books by South Sudanese doctor Emmanuel Taban and the Congolese cultural mediator Nicole Ndongala.

José Carlos Rodríguez then shared with those present some key moments from his experience during the weeks he spent visiting Hazel and Phillip in South Africa, where he gathered the material necessary to write the book.

A central moment of the meeting was the contribution of Hazel and Phillip, who also answered questions from the audience. An application for the simultaneous translation of all contributions, used for the first time at this type of cultural event organised by Mundo Negro, contributed to the success of the meeting.
