The work to reopen the three Comboni communities in Khartoum continues, albeit slowly and amidst countless hardships. The community in Omdurman, on the west bank of the Nile, is overseeing the restoration of the Masalma parish and, for the past few weeks, has also been monitoring the renovation of Comboni College, located in central Khartoum, as well as the provincial house in Bahri, Khartoum North, thanks to the generous support of donors.
The war, which broke out in Khartoum in April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), caused serious damage to the buildings of the provincial community and Comboni College.
Comboni College was founded by the Comboni Missionaries in Khartoum in 1929 to continue the educational work of Saint Daniel Comboni. In 2001, it expanded its educational provision to include higher education and adopted the name Comboni College of Science and Technology.
In addition to this work on the missions historically linked to the Comboni Misisonaries, the confreres are supporting the pastoral life of 11 parishes located within the urban area of Khartoum, where Christian communities have once again gained access to the sacraments. Hope goes hand in hand with work.
At the same time, however, the war continues in the country, and the news coming from North Kordofan (El Obeid) and South Kordofan (Nuba Mountains) remains alarming.
In particular, on 19 June, a diocesan priest, Fr Yohanna al Amin, was killed, along with two parish workers from the Holy Cross parish in Kauda, in the Nuba Mountains, in what appears to be yet another clash between Nuba tribes over a power struggle in the area.
The road to peace remains long, but we do not lose heart.
