Sadly, many times religions have not only contributed to solidarity, but have also caused mistrust and hostility. Unfortunately, even the Catholic Church has sometimes been violent and has been involved in many crusades. St. Francis of Assisi had understood that the style of the crusade was not the wish of Jesus. Pope Bergoglio, also by choosing name Francis, is orienting us decisively towards the way of fraternity and collaboration of religions for the service and salvation of the world.

A Kenyan parliamentarian of Islamic faith participated several times in the weekly prayer of the Catholic group. One day I asked him why he joined our group rather than a Muslim group. He replied that whether you call him Yahweh or Allah, the one who answers is always the one God. I found this to be an important clarification, and a solid basis on which to build a fruitful dialogue with members of different religions.

As periferias são o contexto da missão cristã, onde Cristo nos espera e confia uma missão. «Ir às periferias» tornou-se uma palavra de ordem que o Papa Francisco não se cansa de repetir; é uma espécie de mandato missionário deste pontificado à Igreja no nosso tempo. Uma palavra que não se pode transformar em refrão, num chavão que passamos a repetir para estarmos alinhados com o dicionário de Bergoglio, sem tirarmos as devidas consequências para a nossa vida individual e de comunidade eclesial.

In its last chapter, the Encyclical Fratelli tutti reflects on the role of religions for fraternal coexistence. First of all, it notes that the foundation of just relations between human beings can only be a transcendent truth that grounds their inalienable dignity and full identity. Otherwise, the force of power and one’s own particular interests end up trumping others.
