In chapter four of Fratelli tutti, Pope Francis introduces the theme of citizenship. This is no small matter. In fact, Francis emphasises that “it is necessary to work to establish in our societies the concept of full citizenship and to renounce the discriminatory use of the term minorities, which carries with it the seeds of isolation and inferiority; it paves the way for hostility and discord and takes away the religious and civil rights and achievements of some citizens by discriminating against them”(FT 131).

In the reflection made at the 18th General Chapter, it emerged that as Comboni Missionaries we are present in frontier situations, but we carry out ordinary pastoral work. We realised the need to make more meaningful proposals for the people, to grasp and express more the action of the Spirit in their life and history.

Apenas eleito, o Papa Francisco desvelou este seu sonho de uma igreja em saída para ir às periferias, tanto geográficas como sociais, culturais como religiosas. O Papa Francisco propõe aos cristãos uma atitude de abertura e de inclusão para com todos, especialmente para com os pobres e os descartados. De facto, diz o Santo Padre: «Hoje e sempre os pobres são os destinatários prioritários do Evangelho e a evangelização dirigida a eles é sinal da soberania de Deus que Jesus veio anunciar. É necessário afirmar que existe um vínculo inseparável entre a nossa fé e os pobres.»

After reflecting on the closing off that characterise our time, Pope Francis invites us to think and generate an open world. This is another logic, based on the reality of being fully human, which is realised in the encounter with others. The human person is inclined to bonding: in her very root dwells the call to transcend herself in the encounter with others. Love makes us strive for universal communion.
