In the opening words of the Fifth Chapter of Fratelli tutti – A Better Kind of Politics – Pope Francis tells us that the best politics is that which is placed at the service of the true common good, and that only such politics can serve the purpose of accompanying peoples and nations to live that social friendship on which human fraternity is grafted.

Chapter 5 of the encyclical Fratelli Tutti is dedicated to a better kind of politics, which is one that is truly at the service of the common good. Pope Francis rehabilitates politics as the noble social activity that pursues the common good. And as an example of this better kind of politics, he presents (FT 169) the popular movements that generate various forms of popular economy and community production at the grassroots level.

In chapter four of Fratelli tutti, Pope Francis introduces the theme of citizenship. This is no small matter. In fact, Francis emphasises that “it is necessary to work to establish in our societies the concept of full citizenship and to renounce the discriminatory use of the term minorities, which carries with it the seeds of isolation and inferiority; it paves the way for hostility and discord and takes away the religious and civil rights and achievements of some citizens by discriminating against them”(FT 131).

We live in a time when millions of men, women and children live in the midst of serious humanitarian crises. Social, political and environmental conditions that threaten their lives. It all seems so absurd because, in this globalised world, while we are witnessing an increasing opening of borders to the economic dimension (capital, trade, financial services…), more and more restrictions, walls and barriers arise against the “movement” of people.
