This summer, Pope Francis has an appointment with young Catholics from all over the world in Lisbon for World Youth Day (WYD). For months, in every corner of the earth, groups of young people have been preparing on the themes proposed for this WYD and centred on the figure of Mary, contemplated as the one who “without delay set out” (Lk 1:39). They are also seeking the financial support needed to pay for their journey to the Portuguese capital.

The Comboni Family will be present at WYD with the World Youth Comboni Gathering (WYCG), an initiative that will bring together in Portugal young people who follow Jesus according to the charisma and style of Saint Daniel Comboni. 120 young people, aged between 14 and 30, from Europe, Africa and America have registered. From 26th to 31st July, they will gather in the Portuguese town of Maia to listen to missionary testimonies and participate in activities and dynamics on interculturality and universal brotherhood. For some activities, they will join other young people from the dioceses of Oporto and Braga.

On 31 July, en route to Lisbon, they will stop in Fatima for a visit to the great Marian shrine. On 7 August, however, they will meet together in Santarém to evaluate the – undoubtedly ‘strong’ –experience in Lisbon and reflect on how to give this experience continuity throughout the year, so that it is not reduced to just “one more experience”, but may really help them to be more committed.

Through the intercession of St. Daniel Comboni, we pray for all the young people who are preparing to participate in the WYD in Lisbon, especially for the young Comboni Missionaries of the World Youth Comboni Gathering initiative, so that this international meeting may encourage them to follow Jesus in a missionary style.
