Members of the Comboni Family joined a series of activities focused on faith, ecology and social justice which are being held in parallel to COP30, the UN Climate Change Conference, taking place in Belem, Brazil.

They took part in the international symposium on “The Catholic Church at COP30,” which brought together religious leaders, scientists, and representatives of native peoples to discuss pathways toward ecological conversion.

Another highlight was the “Tapiri,” an ecumenical and interreligious debate at the Anglican Church of Belém, where panellists emphasized the urgency of ecumenism as a platform for climate action. Participants condemned religious and political fundamentalism which is robbing the people of Amazonia of their human rights. They said that nature has been desacralized and turned into an object of exploitation and suggested to put nature at the centre of inter-religious dialogue.

A panel on refugees and migration featured testimonies from Venezuelan, Haitian, and Beninese migrants, who shared their struggles and commended new local initiatives supporting immigrant rights in Pará and Belém.

The day concluded the “procession of martyrs” to honour those religious and civic leaders who spilled their blood in their attempt to bring justice and peace in Amazonia.
