After two months of acts of vandalism and death in Ndubala and its surroundings, perpetrated by armed groups in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the people who had taken refuge in Isiro have begun to return to their villages. This is what Comboni Missionary Father Eliseo Tacchella, who works in the region and has followed all the events from the very beginning, tells us. [In the photo, Father Claudino Ferreira Gomes, a Portuguese Comboni Missionary, prays with the refugees as they depart. For more details, click here]
“When the Lord brought back the captives of Zion, we seemed to be dreaming.” Thus says Psalm 125. For a few days now, we have been preparing the return journey of the displaced people. Yesterday, after Mass, the small pick-up van arrived to take a first group of displaced people back to their villages. It seemed like a dream. The people were overjoyed, and the children were saying, “We are going home!” And so they began to load the little they had arrived with and what they had managed to gather here.
As they were loading, I wondered how they could all fit into such a small vehicle. Yet, about forty of them, mostly children, managed to get in.
Around thirty more remain here, who will be able to return home within a few days. Those who left this morning came from the furthest villages, like Ndubala and Gao.
Together, we all thanked the Lord; Father Claudino Gomes held on to the sides of the small truck to lead the prayer and then... off they went.
A confrere of ours from Mungbere, who left around midday, informed us that he had met the vehicle returning to Isiro. Praise be to God. Everyone arrived safely.
And thank you to all of you who have collaborated in providing hospitality and facilitating the return of these brothers and sisters of ours. And also for the reconstruction of the homes of some of them.
Warmest regards to all.
