The Itinerant Comboni Mission in the Chinese context

Twenty-five years have passed since a small group of Comboni missionaries arrived in Macao to start their work in the Chinese context. The Fen Xiang project was at the centre of their pastoral activities. The opening of a community in Macau and later in Taiwan was aimed at laying the foundations for the presence of the Comboni missionaries in the Chinese context. However, their goal was to establish the ‘Comboni presence’ in mainland China.

Mission never happens by chance nor does it come about simply as fruit of a careful planning for we do believe that mission does not belong to us but to our missionary God who, through the Holy Spirit, continues to inspire, impel and make fruitful our various missionary works. And so, on January 4, 1988 the Comboni Missionaries set foot in the Far East – in the Philippines, 33 years ago. A humble beginning in a continent that is home to the largest portion of humanity. The seed was planted in this numerous archipelago of Islands, the Philippines, which is currently celebrating its 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity on its shores.

The solemnity of Pentecost, on May 23, 2021, has witnessed a very joyful occasion for the community of Saint Daniel Comboni in Roosevelt Avenue, Quezon City and consequently for the whole Asia Delegation: The First Religious Profession of three young men: Bro. Romeo Avenida Boncales from the Philippines, Bro. Dominic Dang Thanh Sang and Bro. Peter Khoa Nguyen Tien from Vietnam.

O padre Manuel António da Silva Machado, missionário comboniano, que passou 25 anos em Macau, dá conta de um caminho de “altos e baixos” no encontro com uma cultura e língua “muito diferentes” em terras asiáticas. “Não se podia fazer muito. Não somos muitos, mas em colaboração com a Igreja local e outros grupos missionários, procurámos ser uma presença dos valores do Evangelho, numa cultura que não conhecia ou até os desvalorizava”, explica à Agência Ecclesia o missionário que actualmente reside na comunidade comboniana, em Viseu.
