An estimated 2,500 people from the state of Rondônia and other parts of Brazil and the world gathered to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the martyrdom of Comboni missionary Father Ezequiel Ramin on 26 and 27 July 2025 in the cities of Cacoal (Rondônia) and Rondonlândia (Mato Grosso). Father Ezekiel dreamed of a more just and peaceful world. He dedicated his life to proclaiming the Gospel and fighting for justice and human rights.

At the Comboni mission in Cacoal, he showed solidarity and committed himself to the cause of poor farmers and indigenous peoples. Today, 40 years after his death, people deeply respect and and draw inspiration from him. A large crowd participated in the tenth pilgrimage of Father Ezequiel Ramin, which had as its theme ‘Father Ezequiel Ramin: martyr of hope’.

Bishop Norberto Hans Christoph Förster, of the Diocese of Ji-Paraná, spoke to the crowd about the importance of commemorating the 40th anniversary of his martyrdom and its significance for the Church today.

Father Ezekiel was brutally murdered by armed men on 24th July 1985, while returning from a peace mission. His example and testimony inspire many who fight for justice and dignity, especially the poorest. Father Ezequiel is alive! May his testimony inspire us in our mission. Ezequiel, present!

Youth and mission: “Young people, what are you looking for?”

Dozens of young people from Comboni parishes in Brazil gathered in Salvador, Bahia, from 25th to 27th July 2025, for the second Assembly of Comboni Youth (AJUCOM), whose theme was: ‘Youth and Mission – Young people, what are you looking for?’ (cf. Jn 1:38). The event took place at the Parish of San Daniele Comboni, which welcomed 175 participants. The days were filled with spirituality, joy, educational topics, missionary and cultural activities. The young people were able to deepen their understanding of the legacy of St. Daniel Comboni and the Comboni mission.

Four workshops addressed important topics such as Afro-descendants, digital communication, life planning, ecology, and our common home. The young people had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of Salvador and celebrate its cultural diversity. The last day of activities was dedicated to missionary visits, an immersion in the reality of the Sussuarana suburb, where the event took place.

The question that resonated in their hearts was: “And you, what is your dream?” The young people testified that they had left to evangelise and returned evangelised!
