Yesterday marked another exciting moment of encounter, learning, and networking, as members of the Forum of the Comboni Family on Integral Ecology (FCFIE) took part in various conversations of diverse nature. Two conversations stood out yesterday. Both were organized by the Ecumenical and Inter-religious “Tapiri” and hosted by the Anglican Cathedral of Belém, Brazil.
These conversations were anchored on the following themes: 1. Youth, Women and LGBTQIAP+ in the Struggle for Climate Justice. 2. How Organizations Can Contribute to Confronting Violations, and Environmental Racism.
The panellists highlighted the need to rethink youth urban migration. It was observed that this phenomenon often disconnects young people from traditional ecological knowledge and practices, thereby weakening existing community-led climate protection efforts.
It was further noted that the effects of climate change are felt by everyone regardless of ones' sexual orientation. Consequently, discrimination and persecution of LGBTQ+ crawls back gains made in the struggle for climate justice.
Additionally, the panellists asserted that organizations like NGOs can positively contribute to the struggle for climate justice, curbing environmental racism, and ensuring popular participation. Hence, fostering the idea of partnership.
Influencing public policy needs organization. Therefore, we can't afford to leave them (NGOs) out in the struggle for climate justice.
