The World Day of the Poor, established by Pope Francis in 2016 at the conclusion of the Jubilee of Mercy, will be celebrated this year on November 16. It is an invitation addressed to all Christians to recognize in the poor the living presence of Christ and to translate faith into concrete acts of solidarity. For 2025, the Pope has chosen a theme drawn from Psalm 71: “You are my hope”. In his message, the Pontiff reminds us that the poor are not merely recipients of assistance, but witnesses to an authentic hope capable of enlightening everyone’s life. Poverty, he affirms, is not overcome by weapons or indifference, but through justice, sharing, and love—forces that build fraternity and restore dignity to every person.

Blessed Are the Poor, Not Misery

For the world, even for its best part, poverty is seen only as an evil to be eradicated. And that is far too little. Dilexi te, the first document of Pope Leo XIV inspired by Pope Francis, speaks mainly about bad poverty — that is, misery and deprivation — but it does not forget the beautiful poverty of the Gospel. Ethics in economics will not exist unless we restore the proper value of evangelical poverty and the social use of wealth. [Luigino Bruni – Avvenire]

Yesterday marked another exciting moment of encounter, learning, and networking, as members of the Forum of the Comboni Family on Integral Ecology (FCFIE) took part in various conversations of diverse nature. Two conversations stood out yesterday. Both were organized by the Ecumenical and Inter-religious “Tapiri” and hosted by the Anglican Cathedral of Belém, Brazil.

Today, 11th November 2025, thirty-four members of the Comboni Family from across the world gathered at the Centro Social Sagrada Família in Belém, Brazil, for the Forum of the Comboni Family on Integral Ecology 2025. This year’s forum runs concurrently with COP30, an international conference on climate change.

A essere sotto i riflettori del mondo, dal 10 al 21 novembre, è la città di Belém, capitale dello Stato brasiliano amazzonico del Pará. «Il tema chiave, per quanto riguarda il nostro contributo, è la denuncia delle ‘false soluzioni’, che è anche uno dei temi forti del documento delle Chiese del Sud globale. C’è il rischio, in particolare, che la transizione energetica di per sé importante e urgente, possa diventare un mito, e un ‘cavallo di Troia’ per le comunità del Sud globale», dice padre Dario Bossi, missionario comboniane, che partecipa alla Conferenza mondiale sul clima (COP30).

Dal 10 al 21 novembre a Belém, in Brasile, la Conferenza delle Nazioni Unite sul cambiamento climatico (COP30). «L’altro ieri, a Kinshasa (Rd Congo), dove lavoro, si è abbattuto un gran temporale con allagamenti da ogni parte. Succede sempre più spesso e questo ci inquieta, perché pensiamo alla povera gente che vive in collina o nelle periferie che, in poche ore, vede distrutta la propria casa o l’orticello, l’impraticabilità delle strade e cento altri problemi», dice padre Fernando Zolli, missionario comboniano.
